The Loch Ness Monster: Facts and Sightings

-o-

The Loch Ness monster is a legendary animal that is said to live in the waters of Loch Ness, a large lake in northern Scotland. The creature supposedly resembles a giant sea serpent, but no one has been able to prove that it really exists.

Legends about the monster have been told for many centuries. The first known written account dates from the year A.D. 565. Saint Columba, an Irish missionary working in Scotland, was said to have seen a large animal in Loch Ness.

Sightings of a monster in Loch Ness increased greatly in 1933, when a new road provided easy access to the rugged and isolated region surrounding the lake. Newspaper reports spread accounts of people who thought they saw Nessie, as the monster is sometimes called. Since the 1930's, many photographs of "sightings" have been taken, although most are not clear enough to distinguish an actual animal. Others have proved to be hoaxes.

During the past several decades, scientists have used modern equipment, such as sonar, to search for evidence of Nessie's existence. Unfortunately for those who hope to find a real monster, Loch Ness is vast and difficult to explore. The water is murky, and underwater caves may exist far below the surface.

Despite the lack of evidence, many people still think that a large serpent-like creature lives in Loch Ness. Could it be a dinosaur-like reptile that never became extinct? Could it be a new kind of animal, previously unknown to science? Or perhaps Nessie exists only in the imaginations of people who like a good mystery. For now, no one can say for sure.
